11 people die in boat accident in Indonesia

– At least eleven people died when a boat capsized east of the island of Sumatra, authorities said on Friday.

The national relief agency said there was suspicion that the ill-fated boat had rammed into floating huge logs some 30 minutes after setting sail from Chandragiri region heading towards the island of Tanjun Benoa.

The region chief officer of the national agency for search and rescue, Neoman Sidakarya, said in a statement that 62 people survived the accident and were rescued. However, he indicated that the number of casualties might rise because many passengers’ names were not registered.

The Indonesian archipelago recurrently witnesses such accidents, largely due to safety issues. In 2018, more than 150 people perished when a ferry sank
