RIYADH: The Saudi Reef Program has underscored its commitment to sustainable rural agricultural development, as highlighted by Secretary General Ghassan Bakri during the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The program, instrumental in supporting small-scale farmers and promoting environmental sustainability, aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 and aims to diversify agricultural production while fortifying food security.
According to Saudi Press Agency, Bakri’s remarks came during a session themed “Sustainable Rural Agricultural Development: A Path for Protecting Natural Resources and Food Security.” He emphasized the program’s achievements in leveraging modern technologies to enhance the sustainability of agricultural and food systems, positioning Saudi Arabia as a leader in rural development. Bakri stated that the program aspires to transform Saudi Arabia into a global model for rural development, improving living standards and creating job op
portunities.
The Saudi Reef Program supports various sectors, including rainfed agriculture, fruits, Saudi coffee beans, and roses, with a focus on innovation and technology. This approach aims to boost local agricultural production, contributing to the national economy and increasing vegetation cover in the Kingdom. The program also aligns with the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture’s digital transformation goals, highlighted by the launch of the Saudi Reef application to streamline services and promote agricultural products.
Bakri further noted that the program’s initiatives aim to improve food security and the income of families involved in the cottage industry while ensuring the sustainability of natural resources for future generations. The efforts reflect a broader commitment to supporting farmers and exploring new market opportunities, thereby enhancing the productivity and resilience of Saudi Arabia’s agricultural sector.
