148 PEOPLE SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR FOMENTING UNREST IN EGYPT
CAIRO, A military court on Sunday sentenced 148 people to life in prison in the Upper Egypt city of Al-Minya in aftermath of dispersing the famous Islamists’ gathering in Rabaa Al-Adawaiyah square in Cairo on August 14, 2013.
The State-run Middle East News Agency (MENA) quoted the defence attorney, Khaled Al-Komi, as saying that the tribunal, held in Asyut in Upper Egypt, issued a 10-year prison verdict for 42 defendants, ordered imprisonment of two for five years and handed down a prison sentence for a juvenile.
Ten others, who were physically present in front of the court, were acquitted.
Al-Komi added that the late public prosecutor, Hisham Barakat, had referred the defendants to the military court in March 2015, on charges of affiliation to the banned Muslim Brotherhood and involvement in storming public installations and urging for demonstrations against the army and police.
